Summary/Abstract: Romanian private individuals (natural or legal persons) have used the judicial protection offered by the Court of Justice of the European Union in numerous occasions since Romania has joined the European Union in January 2007. However, the CJEU acted only in few cases on issues related to the family law although there are provisions in the European Union primary and secondary law in this branch of law. Against this background, this article aims to present, firstly, the most relevant provisions on family law in the European Union legal order, and, secondly, the CJEU case law that already exists in this field, which has a specific relevance for Romanian.
