Summary/Abstract: Economic dietines (sejmiki) developed as the nobility took over matters related to the local taxes and defence. The reforms passed by the Silent Sejm severely limited their competences, and thus their importance. Nevertheless, at their sessions local taxes were occasionally enacted for the needs of the district, local officials, envoys to the king, and other dignitaries were elected, and economic matters were dealt with. The situation changed during the Great Sejm, which reformed the local administration by establishing new self-government bodies and giving electoral and advisory capacities to economic sejmiki.
