Summary/Abstract: In December 1754, Michał and August Czartoryski sent two letters to the Russian Chancellor Aleksei Bestuzhev-Riumin. They asked for the support of St Petersburg since they believed that fundamental rights had been violated in the Commonwealth. They considered the Russian Empire’s alleged guarantee of the Polish political system to be the legal basis of Russian intervention.
