TRANSLATE THE CLICHÉS RELATED TO CRISIS SITUATIONS

Summary/Abstract: This paper focuses on the translation into Romanian of a series of clichés which are frequently used in French when describing a crisis situation. After pinpointing the nature of what assigns to a word or phrase the designation of „cliché”, we shall examine the possible ways of rendering it in Romanian, taking into account the procedures of translation posited by J. P. Vinay and J. Darbelnet in 1958. Resorting either to equivalence or to direct transfer, the translation of clichés requires contextual analysis, especially in those cases where a clichéd phrase in a language has a functioning word-for-word correspondent in another one but where it is actually not perceived as a cliché yet.
