Summary/Abstract: The article attempts to locate the primaeval forests in the royal domain (the so-called table lands, Polish: dobra stołowe) in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the second half of the seventeenth cen-tury. It presents the methods of forests’ exploitation and the duties of forest protection services. It also characterises contracts for woodlands, the two types of which were distinguished: contracts for forests and as administrative units and those for forest products. Attention was paid to restric-tions to contractors aimed at a balance between conservation and exploitation of royal forests.
