Summary/Abstract: Fraenkel derives Lith. vienas from IE *oinos assuming a particle ve- to have induced a change of *oi to ei > rather than while Smoczyriski gives IE */tjOj -noas the underlying form without explaining the transition °i > ie. The present author derives Lith. vienas from IF. *oįnos, invoking irregular change due to frequency to explain the reflex ie. In support of this view he cites Slavic, Romance and Germanic data illustrating the irregular reduction of the numeral ‘one’ in these languages.
