Summary/Abstract: The digital economy is the main instrument in the development of the modern European state. Romania has the intellectual potential, solid experience in the field of information technology, telecommunication and STEM sciences, which are the drain of the digital economy development in all spheres of economic and social activity. In this article, we considered it appropriate to reflect the support of the digital economy for regional development in Romania, which at present faces various economic and social problems. In this article we have proposed a complex approach to the problem in the current conditions of building the knowledge society by addressing the areas of smart specialization at the regional level in Romania, which will be a generator of economic growth of the regions.
