Summary/Abstract: Key models of financial markets assume that time series can be characterised by means of the Gaussian distribution. However, this assumption is often unfulfilled. The aim of this paper is to verify the possibility of using the Cauchy distribution to describe changes in the prices of financial services provided by banks in Poland. Additionally, the research examines a hypothesis assuming that the changes in the prices of banking services depend on the level of the reference rate published by the National Bank of Poland (NBP). The work uses secondary data: price indices of financial services published by Statistics Poland from January 2010 to December 2020 and the NBP reference rate for the same period. The research confirmed that the empirical distribution of price indices can be described by the Cauchy distribution. The study also confirmed a one-direction causality in the Granger’s sense between the reference rate and the prices of financial services provided by banks in Poland.
