Summary/Abstract: The study encompasses grammatical categories inherent to inflective classes of words in Russian and Bulgarian. Even though some Bulgarian parts of speech (mostly verbs) have significant differences in comparison with Russian, the systems of forms and meanings for which the Russian language does not have specialized forms have not been included in this study. The Bulgarian language serves as a background contrasting with the Russian empirical data, and the main approach used is a comparative one. Additionally, the subject of exampination is the categorical and non-categorical meanings of grammatical forms. The two semantic types are invariably connected but the emphasis is put on the manifestations of non-categoriality. The main goal is to explain and describe the ways in which the non-categorical meanings in Russian originated and function. For this purpose the categorical meanings are the first to be examined which continues with a review of the non-categorical ones. With this study a presentation is made of the principles of grammatical categoriality and manifestations of non-categoriality in the Russian and Bulgarian languages, which have not been reviewed meticulously by Bulgarian linguistics yet.
