Repression and Biography in Communism. Nicolae Itul's Prison Experience, Reflected in the Sources of Memory and Securitate Documents

Summary/Abstract: The paper reconstructs Nicolae Itul’sprison biography during communism (1949-1964), using both oral sources (interviews from the personal archive) and documentary files (records from the CNSAS archives). The recuperation of Nicolae Itul’s detention destiny is methodologically place damong prosopographical instruments in the understanding of communist repression. The option for biography and the restitution of individual experiences derives, on one hand, from the nature of the sources (oral history interviews favour the life story), but especially from the fact that the effects of communist repression, respectively the universe of imprisonment, were experienced individually. That is why the memorial and historical (re)valorisation of these destinies, and of the people who opposed communism and suffered because of this attitude, represents an intrinsic stake of the present research.
