Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the semantic category of names of results of actions, which remain in a relation-ship of polysemy with names of actions; egodlew ‘cast’, publikacja ‘publication’, podpis ‘signature’The author views it as a product of semantic derivation based on the mechanism of metonymy, while taking into account the contemporary semantic research with a cognitive aspect The ‘action’ – ‘result of action’ model of semantic derivation has numerous instances in the linguistic system of Polish, and is considerably productive, especially in the classes of actions that lead to the creation of a new state in a telic situation (most of all, creative, destructive, and others which indicate a change of the relationship between the participants of the situation, e g przesyłka ‘shipment’, transport ‘transport’) The metonymic transfer is justified by the shift of the speaker’s focus to what constitutes the most important part of his or her utterance: the expected result of the agent’s action or of process X Simul-taneously, a favourable lexical and sentence context appear to be the vehicle of this derivation, and key for the consolidation of the new word in phrases.
