Summary/Abstract: This paper addresses a set of issues related to the reconsideration and redefinition of property as a concept, and property rights, as social relationships in Romania, after the dismantlement of the communist concept of "socialist property". The social and political evolutions of the 90’s resulted in conflicts and crises with respect to property and property rights. It is in the scope of this essay to suggest a typology of the crises of property that emerged in Romania. Five categories of interdependent crises have been identified, displaying a more or less formal nature: constitutional, operational, decisional, institutional and moral, the existence and relevance of each being argumented individually. In spite of their individual presentation, the paper concludes that a potential solving of these crises can be achieved only by breaking the "vicious circle" that interrelates them. However, this endeavour proves to be extremely difficult, due to the extreme weakness of the institutional framework supporting property and property rights, and to the excessive response of the legislative and administrative body to the shifts in political currents.
