Summary/Abstract: The idea of writing a history of Intelligence Services dates back to 1948 and belongs to the gen. William J. Donovan, former direc tor of the U.S. Office of Strategic Services (O.S.S.), during World War II. He wanted, through this work, to present the immense importance that intelligence services have for the defense of a nation. Once the idea sprouted, General Donovan began to put it into practice, identifying sci entists who would be willing to carry out this project. Working to prepare studies and documents on ancient and modern political philosophy, F. Dvornik studied a vast bibliographic material, reaching the same conclusion as General Donovan, namely that many regimes and empires could survive only through the good organisation of information services. This conviction led him to compile in a single volume all the material relat ing to the collection and transmission of information and to publish it, in 1974, under the title “Origins of the Intelligence Service”, thus trying to deal with a neglected subject, generally by historians, but which, in his view, would help towards a better understanding of many historical events. The conclusions of the book are: i) the politico military leaders of Antiquity (Chinese and Roman emperors, Indian, Persian, Geto Dacian, Pontic or Carthaginian kings, Egyptian pharaohs, leaders of the Greek polis) created a rgenuine world of “intelligence men”; ii) this world has individualized itself as an occult, complex, and often unpredictable, enigmatic, fascinating, and contradictory world; iii) most remained anon ymous, but consecrated the immortality of the great politico military leaders of Antiquity.
