Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the article is to investigate the derivational structure of the adjectives “пандемійний” and “пандемічний” and to substantiate scientifically the derivational variance of these adjectives in the modern Ukrainian language. The subject of the study comprises derived from a noun adjective variants “пандемійний” / “пандемічний”, connected with the variation of the suffix -н-. The research material includes present-day informative texts from the Internet of various genres, as well as academic lexicographic sources of the early twentieth century. During the research following methods were used: analysis of scientific linguistic literature, theoretical comprehension and generalization of scientific bases of the problem investigated; component analysis to define the semantic-derivational potential of the lexemes “пандемійний” and “пандемічний”; the method of quantitative calculations to quantify the indices of the productive use manifestation of the adjective “пандемічний” and its derivational variant “пандемійний” in the current lexicon; method of generalization to clarify the dictionary entry of the noun “пандемія”. The novelty of the study consists of the scientific reasoning of derivational variance of desubstantive adjectives “пандемійний” and “пандемічний” on the basis of the linguistic research methods used, and the suggestion to qualify them as derivational variants. It is proved that adjective forms derived from the noun bases ending in -іj with the suffix -н- are quite common in the modern Ukrainian lexicon. Furthermore, new world-wide pandemic realities made it possible to record the use of the noun derived from adjective “пандемійність”. Conclusions. In the context of the dynamic processes of the Ukrainian lexicon of the 2020s, one of the leading places is occupied by the determinologization of separate lexical units of medical field. Under the influence of the global pandemic of coronavirus disease COVID-19, the noun “пандемія” and the adjective derived from it “пандемічний” went beyond the narrow scientific medical system of their functioning and rapidly became part of the common language. However, the most widespread determinologized lexeme in the active speech of present-day Ukrainians is still the adjective “пандемійний”, which has clearly supplanted its derivational variant “пандемічний”. Given this, academic lexicographical sources should record such derivational variation of adjective forms in the dictionary entry of the noun “пандемія”, by adding to it the adjective “пандемійний”.
