Summary/Abstract: The author deals with the accomplishment of an European project which dates back from the Middle Age (791), when the Emperor Charles the Great was the first to have the intention to connect the Danube with the Rhine, hence willing to realize a trans-European waterway. His dream came true 1,199 years later, on 25-th of September 1992, when the channel was finally inaugurated.The article makes a historical analysis of the struggles to achieve this project, struggles which stretched along more than 1,000 years, but he also approaches the subject from a political and economical perspective.
