Summary/Abstract: Discovered in two different places, between 1964-1965, on Sociului Valley and Baltagan Hill, from Ţepu village, the thesaurus consists of two lots of coins emitted by the Ottoman Empire and Russia during the 18th century. Both lots, which are part of this thesaurus, comprise coins emitted during the time of Mustafa III and Abdul Hamid I and are made out of billon in the Islambol mint with medium nominal values of 30 para (zolta), 40 para (kuruş, piastru), 60 para (2 zolta, altmişlik). The coins emitted by the tzarinas Elisabeth and Ecaterina II are made of silver in Sankt-Petersburg and Moscow mints. They have the nominal values of 10 kopeicas (1 grivenek), 20 kopeicas, 25 kopeicas (polu poltinic) and 1 rouble. The first lot consists of 127 coins, out of which 100 are Ottoman and 27 are Russian, and the second lot comprises 116 coins, 109 being Ottoman and 7 Russian. The thesaurus from Ţepu, with a total of 243 coins, chronologically comprised between 1757 and 1788, was probably hidden at the end of the 18th century or at the beginning of the XIXth century, due to the many military confrontations between the neighboring empires, Tzarist and Ottoman, which used to have the Romanian Principalities as an operation field for their military confrontations.
