Summary/Abstract: On January 1, 2009, the Act of December 5, 2008 on preventing and combating infections and infectious diseases in humans came into force and epidemic as one of the crisis situations was described in the National Plan for Crisis Management (updated in 2020). Subsequent phases of social response to a pandemic resemble, known from the literature, phases of stress response. Human body in a situation of confrontation with a sudden, threatening stressor reacts in one automatic way, producing an increased amount of cortisol, which in a situation of extreme and chronic stress weakens the immune system and is the cause of many diseases. Cited in the article results of surveys of mental health of Poles, in both waves of the pandemic may indicate depletion of resources to cope with the situation of nearly 60% of the respondents. We are facing a third and perhaps even a fourth wave. What might be the health effects of the current crisis? What costs will they entail? Will there be a total collapse of the health care system? These questions still remain unanswered.
