Summary/Abstract: The paper briefly presents the history of the TMR (Theory of Mechanisms and Robots) Department of Polytechnic University of Bucharest, the place where the basic engineering sciences of mechanics, robotics, mechatronics, automation were born. Also, within this department, there were laid the foundations of engineering faculties in the fields of mechanics and industry; the first disciplines specific to the academic scientific fields of industrial and mechanical engineering were born. Here, the first multidisciplinary research appeared in the fields of computerized analytical geometry, special mathematics, computational graphics, graphic-analytical methods, in various collaborations with specialised departments in the fields of: mathematics, automation, physics, descriptive geometry, CAD, mechanics. The “soul” and creator of this department was obviously the late Dr.Eng. Docent Professor N.I. Manolescu, a corresponding member of the Romanian Academy.
