Summary/Abstract: Defining the relations of the church community and the state was an integral part of the Second Vatican Council. The Council Fathers developed a catalog of specific principles according to which the relations between the Catholic Church and the state should be shaped. Conciliar doctrine is now the basis of the teaching of popes. The successive bishops of Rome, however, did not stop at continuing the teaching of the Council, but tried to develop it. Pope Francis also undertakes activities aimed at deepening the teaching of the Second Vatican Council in its selected aspects, including the issue of the relationship between the Church and the state.
