Summary/Abstract: allyu, also known as the Korean Wave has been on the rise since the late 1990s, boosting the popularity of all things Korean, from fashion and cinema to music and cuisine. As a result of this phenomenon and the measures taken by the Korean government, South Korea is gaining more and more soft power on the international stage. The media environment in the context of which the Korean cultural wave was born and developed, not only shaped it, but is also one of the reasons for its existence. Based on an in-depth analysis of the role of the media in the spread of Korean culture in the country and around the world, the present study explores on the use of culture as soft power resource by the state with key media involvement.
