Summary/Abstract: 1877 represents a crucial moment in Romania’s modern history, due to Mihail Kogălniceanu’s speech given in the Parliament on the 9th/21st of May, as well as due to the state’s involvement, for the first time, in a military conflict such as the Russo-Turkish war. Although a relatively new institution (with less than two decades of existence), the Romanian Army involved itself with professionalism, in difficult circumstances, in the military operations carried out south of the Danube. This study highlights how the Army (and not only) adapted gradually to the demand of modern warfare (not only does it demand greater numbers, but also an in-depth knowledge, on all plans, of the enemy. The national informative system, with both its military and civilian information-gathering components (belonging to the Ministry of Internal Affairs), continuously improved since the doing of 1877, when there were significant chances for the territory to become an active warzone.
