Electronic warfare - trends and perspectives

Summary/Abstract: This article addresses the concept of electromagnetic environment as an operational environment and the role the electronic warfare with its components plays in it. In the end, we present some of the conceptual, technological and operational developments that have the potential to shape the way the electronic warfare is employed in the future military operations. These include concepts like cognitive electronic warfare, collaborative electronic warfare, cyber - electronic warfare integration; technologies like active electronically scanned array antennas, Gallium Nitride based monolithic microwave integrated circuits, high energy lasers, solutions against hypersonic missiles and challenges posed by passive radars in suppression of enemy air defenses scenarios.
