Summary/Abstract: In the recent decade, both the international community and the EU have been giving an ever growing attention towards the provision of effective defence for intellectual property, the latter concerning two categories of rights: industrial property, which includes patents, trade- marks, industrial designs and models and designations of origin, and copyright, which relates to artistic and literary works. This positive tendency is due to a number of factors, which have a major impact on the exercise of the said rights, such factors being globalization, techno- logical progress and the considerable increase in the number of violations of intellectual property rights. The aforementioned challenges require that adequate and appropriate measures be taken for ensuring a sufficiently high level of protection of intellectual property as the latter has its ever greater influence on the economic growth and competitiveness of the EU countries all over the world. This study analyzes the basic legal means of protection of those intellectual property rights which are adopted in international law and the EU law, as well as the effect of contemporary challenges upon the said rights. In the recent decade, both the international community and the EU have been giving an ever growing attention towards the provision of effective defence for intellectual property, the latter concerning two categories of rights: industrial property, which includes patents, trade- marks, industrial designs and models and designations of origin, and copyright, which relates to artistic and literary works.
