Femfest – What, Why and How?

Summary/Abstract: Art offers us the possibility to code the creative process according to what kind of persons we are and how we feel; according to what we choose to be, and what kind of a message we wish to convey. In feminist art coded message is the one that breaks the mold of patriarchy, the one that enables us to explore who we are outside of the given frames, gender roles, to explore who we are within and without our sex. It is the art that spreads the message of the desire to live as the woman and the man that we are, not who we should be, or have been taught to be. Femfest festival drew together feminists and those who think and act thus from several Croatian towns, neighboring countries, even the faraway Norway. It offered a vision of the world from a feminist perspective, whether through lectures and discussions in the symposium part of the program, or through art. Art offers many possibilities to live and liven up the feminist thought in space, in a creative, imaginative and distinctive way, depending on the style and affinities of the author. As part of our cultural and art program, these works had a demanding task – to pass on the message of feminism and yet possess the necessary quality to be recognized as art.
