Summary/Abstract: Dariusz Piotr Klimczak treats of the problems related to the existence of papal celebrities (explicite the pope as a celebrity). The case of papal celebrity in the pop-cultural reality is an interesting novelty in sociology, yet poorly considered and shaped empirically or methodologically. The main purpose of this article is to present essential characteristics of being a pope’s celebrity in media. In this study, the celebrity has been presented using the example of a popes (from Pio XI to Francis I), which the author describes as celebrytans. His behaviour, gestures, broadcasts, statements and comments, social role and idolatry have been taken into consideration and analysis. Categorisation and describeration is an important element in analysing the content of mass media and has been used in this article based on anthropology of culture, sociology of culture, social psychology, philosophy of religion, “celebritology” etc. All considerations were placed in theoretical frames of pop culture and the critical reflection on the phenomenon of papacy and celebritans in the time of the crisis of the Church. The main purpose of this article is to answer the question which reflects the leading problem of this work. Hence, what are the characteristics of a celebritans and what are the social consequences from performing the celebrity role of pope in society.
