Summary/Abstract: The lack of a study on abstract painting in the Republic of Moldova constituted a first impetus for the research of the respective theme and the curatorial concept was oriented towards confirming the presence of formalistic elements and then the abstract painting within the artistic phenomenon of the MSSR and then of the Republic of Moldova, their presence in the creation of notable artists of the national art. The exhibition was a retrospective one and focused on works performed during the ’60s – ’90s of the XX century. This project attempted to identify the evolutionary path of abstract painting, as well as to elucidate stylistic, conceptual and aesthetic ideology searches. Questions such as: how it was possible to break the context and the landmarks of socialist realism and reflect an aesthetic content absolutely different from the social order; discovering the most inaugural forms of abstract art; when and how it was possible to connect and synchronize to the international context etc. The chosen selection highlighted the variety of directions covered by autochthonous abstract painting – nonfigurative painting. The artists, who followed the abstract as a formula of artistic identity, are highlighted but also the artists for whom abstract art was only a passage or a step in building the plastic approach are presented. Variations of style have been followed in the creation of one and the same author by selecting two works from different periods or series.
