Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the evolution of the French locative preposition dans in different kinds of locative constructions. Based on operational concepts of strong/weak locativity, it strives to show that prototypical use of dans seems to be strongly correlated with syntactic regularity (possibility of coordination, anaphorization, etc.). This pattern is then made use of to explain some peculiarities in the diachronic evolution of this preposition, notably when it is complemented by primarily bi-dimensional space portions like island.
