Summary/Abstract: Baptism of Poland (996) became during 19th century a symbol of beginnings of Polish culture. It was a period of partition of Poland conquered by conquered by neighboring empires. To avoid or minimize the impact of cultural imperialism of Prussian, Austrian and Russsian empires, Polish philosophers had brought attention to the history of Polish philosophy. In this context arose the problem of the beginnings of Polish philosophy. Krakow intellectual center was the most important place form shaping this topic of historiography. Initially, the beginnings were identified with the establishment the Academy in Kraków, however it was quickly revised. The most important revision was made by the historians inspired by etnography, who considered spontaneous folk philosophy. In this context the baptism of Poland were critically evaluated as an act of cultural imperialism, which extinguished Slavic folk philosophy and replace them by universal Latin philosophy. This negative attitude to cultural aspect of christianization of Poland has later changed because of the shifts in historiography provoked by narrowing the concept of philosophy to academic philosophy only. In late 19th century baptism of Poland was finally positively evaluated, which led to appreciation Polish philosophy as a part of European philosophical culture.
