Summary/Abstract: Pope Francis calls the whole Church to follow Jesus’ example to commit herself to the proclamation of the Gospel, whose heart is God’s mercy. Referring to the “theology of people”, born in Argentina after the Second Vatican Council, he appeals to clergy for pastoral conversion, which is expressed in adopting a preferential option for the poor and going out to the periphery towards the excluded and marginalized in social life. The spiritual experience and wisdom of ordinary people should be an inspiration for theological research and pastoral solutions. St Alphonsus Maria de Liguori approaches theology and pastoral activity in a similar way, paying special attention to the spiritual needs of the poor, proclamation of the good news of God’s saving love to all people and showing mercy to weak sinners. For both Pope Francis and the Doctor of the Church, immersion in the lives of ordinary people is an important impulse for elaborating understandable and useful theology for all, and for shaping pastoral attitudes through which man can experience the love and gentleness of the Redeemer.
