Summary/Abstract: The author of the article presented the issue of the evolution of the discipline and doctrine concerning the canonical impediment of the vow of chastity during the period from the beginning of Christianity to the times of classical canon law. He proved that the impediment of the vow of chastity was not introduced in early Christianity but in the second millennium. The author believes that the crucial influence on the shape of this impediment was that of the Gregorian Reform, especially the resolutions of the Second Council of the Lateran. The considerations of medieval theologists and canonists on the forms of functioning of this legal limitation led to making an especially important distinction between simple and solemn vows. These medieval legal regulations and doctrinal arrangements were so essential that they influenced further development of ecclesiastical doctrine in this matter. This was reflected in the dispositions included in the first Code of Canon Law of 1917 in which in the catalogue of impedient impediments was the one of simple vows (can. 1058), while the catalogue of diriment impediments included the impediment of solemn vows (can. 1073).
