Summary/Abstract: Economic and property crimes related to the hard coal mining industry in Poland generate annually significant financial losses. Moreover, in some cases, they cause a substantial threat to the life and health of miners. The issue is particularly demonstrable and tangible in the area of machinery and equipment management. Unfortunately, the practice has shown that law enforcement agencies often encounter considerable difficulties when investigating and prosecuting cases concerning that area. The main aim of the article is to provide a baseline portrait of the most common mechanisms and types of crimes in the said area as well as to discuss frequently occurring investigative obstacles. The paper concludes by emphasizing factors that seem to play a key role in successive preventing and combating criminal offences in the area in question (an efficient internal control system inside coal mine companies; a broad flow of information between coal companies and law enforcement agencies; law enforcement agencies’ awareness of common crime schemes and possible investigative obstacles).
