Summary/Abstract: The article addresses the creation and transformation of a site of memory related to the visits of Peter the Great to the Russian North. The history of constructing and restoring the monument to Peter the Great in Arkhangelsk, being presented in the framework of collective memory studies, makes it possible to identify how the monumental commemoration was discussed in the local community and trace the interaction between the local memorial culture and the official historical narrative of the Russian Empire and later the Soviet state. Based on the documents from the State Archives of the Arkhangelsk Region and local press, the article presents the main stages of constructing the site of memory and commemorative practices associated with it, as well as the specifics of interaction between their participants. The authors show that the monumental commemoration of Peter the Great was not only based on the events of local history, but also focused on the military history of the Russian state highlighting the Poltava victory as the key event.
