Summary/Abstract: From the 9th to the 11th century Ras was an important Bulgarian fortress on the border of the Serbian lands. Written and archaeological sources show explicitly that it enters the Bulgarian tsardom in the Early Middle ages. It is possible that the tax paid by Serbs to Bulgaria was delivered in Ras. The town was one of the Bulgarian episcopal sees. Ras was captured by Byzantum in 1018. During the first half of the 12th century Serbs conquered the fortress.
