Summary/Abstract: Romania’s main foreign policy objectives since the EU’s accession were to join Schengen Area and Eurozone. However, after more than ten years, Romania has not achieved any of these objectives. This article aims to investigate how discourses of politicians reflect the economic relations between EU and Romania and why Romania is not yet part of Schengen Area and Eurozone. In doing so, I collected 13 formal public discourses of Romanian and European leaders using as sources official sites and newspapers. This paper analyzes discourses of politicians between 2014 and 2019. The relevance of the period lies in representative political events for EU-Romania relations such as the election of a pro-European president Klaus Iohannis in 2014 and the fact Romania assumed the Presidency of the European Union Council in the first six months of 2019. The results show Romania faces difficulties in europeanisation of its policies and in the negotiation process, which is why it does not become a member of the Schengen Area and Eurozone. Other dimensions of relations such as security and human rights as well as Romania and the EU during the coronavirus pandemic can be subject to further research.
