Summary/Abstract: The introductory aspect of social criticism in Paulo Freire, as well as the historical context to which he directed his analysis, are explained by the struggle against the “culture of silence”, a continuous framework in the contradictory Brazilian society of his time. This contradiction opposed an archaic society to socially emerging sectors. The people immersed in the atmosphere of silence, which at the same time assumed a semi-intransitive awareness, found itself launched in a transitivity perspective towards the restructuring of the ways of thinking. This study aims to ask the extent to which, in the face of these sectarianisms, the process of the mass’s awareness would be conditioned by the emergence of the word-action.
