Summary/Abstract: Since the time of first grammatical descriptions made by Greek stoics, adverbs have been a very diverse class which comprises all that is neither a name nor a verb, nor a particle. Therefore, within this class of words, there are units with very different syntagmatic behaviours; for example, lexical expandable words can be found sharing the word class with others which are non-expandable and tied to single contexts. This paper proposes possible syntagmatic criteria to classify adverbs in the same way it has been done with other classes of lexical words.
