Summary/Abstract: The article presents contemporary cognitive theories of learning to indicate the importance of the concept of limited human cognitive resources in establishing practical guidelines for designing educational materials effectively. In particular, we discuss the theory of cognitive load and the cognitive theory of multimedia learning. Given the assumptions of both theories, the paper presents principles and recommendations for designing educational materials, and overviews the empirical research in the domain of learning. The article also focuses on an analysis of multimedia educational content, including available e-textbooks, whose forms of presentation may lead to the unwanted effects of cognitive load.
