Summary/Abstract: Since Syria gained its independence in 1946, there has been rarely any periods without confrontation between Damascus and the United States. This essay seeks to highlight the roots of this antagonism, and examines the conflicts which put Syria with the United States on this permanent collision course. The regional U.S. strategy of consecutive administrations as well as Syria’s geopolitical position and unique features of statehood will be given a special emphasis. The paper argues that realism-based national interest was crucial factor in shaping Syria’s hostile approach towards the U.S., while ideological considerations were often the defining factors in the American strategy towards Damascus.
