Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with right-wing Zionist freedom-fighter and subsequent Israeli PM Menachem Begin’s career as head of the Betar youth movement in Poland, prisoner in Soviet Russia and underground leader in Palestine. Particular rumours and charges regarding Begin’s life are paid special attention: namely the accusations of Begin having distorted the memory of the Holocaust, or having supported either Communism, terrorism or Fascism. The study concludes that most accusations against Begin were politically motivated and had little resemblance to historical facts. However, some of the rumours explored here were, in fact, spread by Begin’s numerous supporters. The study is based on previously largely untapped archival material from the United Kingdom and Israel.
