Summary/Abstract: On the occasion of the Tartu Gatherings in 2012, a book that reviewed all earlier Gatherings in Biosemotics was published by the University of Tartu Press, edited by Silver Rattasepp and Tyler Bennett (both PhD students in semiotics at that time). The motivation to compile such a volume certainly reflects our enthusiasm in biosemiotics, our belief in the importance of this field. However, in addition, we wanted to mark an important period in biosemiotics, which could have been better understood via a self-description of the events in these years. Indeed, the eleven years since the first Gatherings (and ten since the 2002 Gatherings in Tartu) was the period that gave us not only many scientific results, but also the society for biosemiotic studies, the journal Biosemiotics, the biosemiotics book series, a remarkable growth of interest in semiotic biology and an interest towards it or at least attention from other fields of science and the humanities.
