Summary/Abstract: A degree of tension surfaces throughout semiotics at times between dyadic and triadic models of the sign, of semiosis, and of how we should understand and analyse such. Often this fault line seems to lie between traditions of inquiry that are characterized as “semiological” as opposed to those which follow a path that is more broadly semiotic in the way that Peirce outlined. Th ese disagreements appear to be ultimately about the nature of the sign and its irreducible character. Certainly it is clear that high stakes might be involved, and accordingly passionate defences make complete sense.
