Summary/Abstract: This paper was written in an attempt to shed light on the personality and work of a worthy man, generous humanist and humble follower of Christ – Bishop Mojsije Mioković of Gornji Karlovac, who had been almost completely forgotten among the locals. Owing to this paper, in 2013 the parishioners of the Serbian Orthodox community in Obilićevo erected a memorial plaque to their bishop. Mojsije Mioković was born in 1770 in Banat, in the Serbian border village of Josefsdorf (modern-day Novi Kneževac), to a very pious family. He was tonsured at the Rakovac Monastery in 1785. Remarkably well-educated, hard-working and intelligent, he was ordained bishop of the Eparchy of Gornji Karlovac (with its seat in Plaški) in 1807. The times in which Mojsije Mioković lived were tempestuous – unhappy, challenging and fraught with suffering for the Serbian people. In Krajina, empires and rulers replaced each other in quick succession, but the bishop had an innate talent for diplomacy. Napoleon Bonaparte awarded him the Legion of Honour order of merit and the Austrian emperor granted him an aristocratic title. Mojsije Mioković built churches, established schools for children, used his own resources to feed, clothe and educate orphans, paid their tutors, sponsored scholarships for talented pupils at the Academy of Vienna regardless of their religion, donated clothes, food and money to the impoverished and starving people, and was a patron and benefactor of many great Serbian intellectuals.
