The use of factor analysis for the assessmentof socio-economic development on the local scale

Summary/Abstract: This paper analyses the reasons why knowledge about socio-economic development has been separated from general knowledge about local development. The authors present methods and tools which should be used by self-government authorities to improve competitiveness position (socio-economic development) of a unit. Synthetic index for all communes of Lubelskie Voivodeship has been formed on the base of statistical data collected by the Regional Data Bank, in eight different areas: population development, availability of health services, availability and quality of educational services, availability of cultural ser- vices, demographic and work conditions, life quality of local society.
