Summary/Abstract: A progressive process of ageing the population of Poland is the economic and social problem. According to a Eurostat forecast during the next 30 years the number of persons in working age will be reduced in Poland by over 4.5 million persons, that is almost 20 percent. The expected decline of scale of the labour force will cause the decrease of state incomes. However a gradual increase in the average life expectancy will cause the growth of expenses on pension, health care and long-term care of older persons. In this situation the main challenge for the economic policy in Poland will be to boost the proportion of people working in the population. It is one of the ways to minimize the consequences of ageing society The article highlights the direction of demographic changes happening in Polish society, and actions, which aim is to increase the level of professional activity of elderly people.
