Summary/Abstract: The maintenance of proper ratio between economic and demographic development is a very substantial challenge for governments in the contemporary world. Lower and lower number of children has been born and the birth rate has not assured generation replacement in Poland and in many European Union states since the 90s. This situation forces governments to establish a climate promoting families and family life. The paper presents trends in the field of the fertility rate in the European Union states and factors which have an impact on the fertility rate, based on the contemporary surveys. Moreover, the paper includes factors, which stimulate transformation of the contemporary family, and recommendations in the field of modernization of the Polish family promoting policy.
