State aid for research & development & innovation activities of enterprises in the European Union’s competition policy in the period 2004-2010

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present legal and economic issues of state aid granted for Research & Development & Innovation (R&D&I) activities of enterprises in the European Union. The principles of the acceptability of R&D&I aid in the light of the common competition policy were discussed. The author analyzed the value, structure and trends in aid granted for this purpose in the Member States. In the following section he provided an assessment of the correlation between the amount of R&D&I aid and the achieved innovation’s results in the EU countries. The last part of the paper was devoted to the number of decisions issued by the European Commission on detailed objectives, types of programs and selected Member States in which financial measures for R&D&I were implemented.
