Summary/Abstract: Discussion of the Polish youth’s historical and civil education has a centuries-old tradition in Poland. In the nineteenth century the issue was debated during the General Congresses of Polish Historians which to this day remain the most important forum for the historical profession. Consequently, didactics of history has enjoyed significant professional and social advancement. From a subject that was of interest mainly to history teachers, it has evolved into a distinctive historical subdiscipline, engaging in debates on the burning issues of the day, receiving the increasing amount of attention, becoming part of research traditionally conducted within other segments of the historical profession and stimulating new fields of historical inquiry. Analysis of the proceedings of the Congresses shows the evolution that didactics of history has undergone in terms of the role it has played in the development of history and other academic disciplines.
