OSLOBAĐANJE ILI OSVETA ISTORIJE: 30 GODINA OD PADA BERLINSKOG ZIDA
LIBERATION OR THE REVENGE OF HISTORY: 30 YEARS SINCE THE FALL OF BERLIN WALL

Summary/Abstract: The author first highlights the unfounded great expectations and euphoria that followed the fall of Berlin wall, expressed in Francis Fukuyama’s theory on “the end of history”. Then the author attempts to provide an answer why in the decades following the dramatic changes that took place in 1989. the process of “liberation of history” and “the return to (modern) history” in number of post-Communist countries took shape of “revenge of history”, why in number of countries historic involution took place, taking shape of a fall in pre-modern forms of exploitation, alienation, social, ethnic and religious conflicts and wars. The author concludes that post-Communist transition is more complex and longer lasting process than it seemed at first. Dramatic end of authoritarian system marked the end of “ancient regime”, but it did not mark the end of old society that, unlike the form of government, cannot quickly transform into democratic citizens’ society. Therefore it is necessary to confront the euphoria and non-realistic expectations from „democratic revolution of 1989.“ with sober and realistic thoughts on challenges, paradoxes and troubles of transition from post-Communist to democratic society. In the end, the author highlights the denial of principles of rule of law, simulation of parliamentarism and singularisation of pluralism in the political system in Serbia. He concludes that in Serbia neither the Parliament received the role of real legislator and effective control of Government, nor has the people, as the nominal bearer of the sovereignty, the possibility to take decisions through Parliament.
