Summary/Abstract: The study adopts the pattern-based approach to language analysis. It examines the lexico-grammatical pattern in which the Polish verb of movement dojść combines with the direct object in the genitive case. The analysis is based on corpus data extracted from the National Corpus of Polish. It is observed that the transitive use of the verb in this meaning-pattern combination typically does not express veridical movement, but acquires a metaphorical meaning, related to reaching a state. The metaphorical meaning arises from the elaboration of the PATH schema, inherent in the semantics of the verb. In this way, the pairing of the morphosyntactic pattern with a specific meaning constitutes a semantically motivated local schema, with specialised meaning.
