Summary/Abstract: The article aims at determining the place of zhyrau poetry in Kazakh literature. It has become clear that one should not go far in search of the origins of the Kazakh song, that the answers to the questions we are interested in should be sought in the depths of the emerging Kazakh literature. Poetry zhyrau, born centuries ago, being one of such traditional sources, became the object of our research. Thus, we analyzed the place of poetry zhyrau in modern literature, reviewed the research path, also reflected and systematized the scientific views of Kazakh and foreign scientists. Special attention is paid to the study of the fundamental principles of the phenomenon of zhyrau as a literary genre and determining the main features of the poetry of zhyrau. Were also reviewed and comprehensively analyzed the features of other artistic genres related to poetry zhyrau, namely: tolau, terme, arnau. The work touches upon various aspects relating to traditional and innovative issues that have become, since the 1950s and 1960s, the object of close attention of Kazakh researchers. The subject of the study are the works of such famous poets and writers as Sh. Ualikhanov, M. Auyezov, T. Medetbek, N. Aituly, Iran-Gayyp, M. Raiymbekuly, S. Negimov. Poetry zhyrau is a source of national poetry, the channel of our traditions and literary traditions are both artistic growth and the phenomena that link today with the paths of development. Despite the fact that, to date, various studies have addressed the problems of “Tradition” in the literature, they are not as widely and extensively represented as we would like. Considering the traditions of zhyrau preserved in their memory as alien, the people limited themselves to an interest in later works. We believe that there are two reasons for this. First, the basis of the poetry of Zhyrau lies the dream of our ancestors of freedom and independence. At the same time, being free and heroic poetry, carrying the sounds of freedom to isolated Kazakhs and evoking a spirit of independence, it contradicted the policy of the Soviet power. Secondly, at that time any valuable undertakings, interesting ideas were made to be associated with the “Great Russian People”. Even works written during the Soviet period appeared under the yoke of this ideology. As a result, we have moved away from the correct way of studying the natural development of our literature. They created an artificial opinion, choked the sources of literary heritage, associating, worst of all, with the name and work of Abai, as well as with the national values of our people. But, fortunately, this hypocrisy did not last long, time put everything in its place. Despite the power of the red empire, the legacy of the great ancestors was preserved, thanks to the high civil position of our people, and it sprang up, revived with independence.
